Milan, Italy – 4 October 2024:
MainStreaming has officially joined FAPAV (Federation for the Protection of Audiovisual and Multimedia Content Industries). FAPAV’s President, Federico Bagnoli Rossi, commented: “With MainStreaming on board, FAPAV’s ability to protect the rights of the television industry is further strengthened.” Philippe Tripodi, co-founder of MainStreaming, added: “By joining forces with FAPAV, we are intensifying the fight against piracy, safeguarding content, revenues, and the future of the media industry.”
Bagnoli Rossi also expressed gratitude towards MainStreaming, a pioneer in Edge Video Delivery Networks, for its commitment to fighting audiovisual piracy, which is crucial for ensuring the best quality experience for users during live, broadcast-grade streaming. He further emphasized that the live events sector, particularly sports, is heavily impacted by piracy, as highlighted by the recent FAPAV/Ipsos data. Rossi stated that creating synergies between content delivery companies, like MainStreaming, and the broader industry is key to continuing the fight against piracy.
Tripodi further explained that piracy costs the media industries in the US and Europe over $30 billion annually, mainly due to illegal streaming and IPTV services. While security measures such as DRM, tokenization, and watermarking are commonly implemented, piracy remains difficult to control. MainStreaming’s business focuses on ensuring quality of experience (QoE) for end users. However, the piracy threat, especially for major sports rights and films, remains persistent. Unauthorized streaming distribution, for example, can occur via social media or illegal IPTV services.
The FAPAV/Ipsos study for 2023 revealed that audiovisual piracy affects 39% of the market, causing over €1 billion in damages, with around 81 million lost viewings. The broader impact on Italy’s economy is estimated at €2 billion in lost revenue, a €821 million reduction in GDP, €377 million in lost tax revenue, and potentially 11,200 jobs at risk.
